The Pied-billed Grebe is a species we see regularly in South Florida and is also one of the more photogenic birds we have. They are a migrant species but we always have a few who stick around all Summer long.
We haven’t had a lot of babies being born here but the Grebes do court quite a bit. Their courtship calls are quite distinctive and we often see them paired up.
I have been very lucky over the years to get many nice shots of these guys often with wonderful reflections.
One great thing about the Grebes are that they are very predictable. When they are through taking a bath they preen pretty much the same way every time and it allows for some very cool action shots.
Sometime when the early migrants show up the Grebes will still have their breeding plumage. They are quite different looking with their Black throats and bold eye ring.
The Pied-billed Grebe is one of my favorite species. They are such cute little guys and like I said are so easy to photograph. I hope you enjoyed these shots of them and I hope to do a few more species highlights in the future.
These accounts are not meant to be anything more than just a group of pretty pictures and not I’m not planning to get into a bunch of field guide type stuff as there is plenty of that on the net already.
Hope you enjoyed and God Bless!
