Bobcat Family Drama …

Bobcat ... Taken December 2nd 2011 at Green Cay Wetlands

Back in December I had posted about Green Cay Wetlands and included a picture of a very young Bobcat.  It was one of four siblings that have been the highlight of many visitors to this amazing place.  They aren’t seen everyday but at least a couple of times a week someone will see Mom and some of the kids.

Momma Bobcat staying hidden!

I’ve had some recent glances at them but today was blessed to see Mom and 2-3 of the youngsters.  The mother Bobcat was trying to round-up the kids when someone scared them and off one ran.

Bobcat (youngster) ... the larger of the two that I got images of.

She was successful in getting two of them rounded up and through a culvert to another area where she was feeling safer.  This is one of the ones she rounded up!

Bobcat Kitten ... looking for his family, poor little guy.

This poor guy was the one who ran off.  He was crying and crying for his mother and he eventually went and laid down deep in the woods.  I’m sure that this isn’t the first time they have been separated and she’ll come get him in good time!

I did see some nice birds today but these guys truly stole the show so they’ll get all the press time today.  As always thanks for the visit!

About sheriffsmith

I have worked for the Broward County Sheriff's Office the last 13 years and spend most of my free time birdwatching / naturewatching and photographing the birds and nature that I encounter. I believe God has blessed us with a world that is so absolutely fascinating and wonderful and I'm doing my best to discover and show others all that he has provided us with in nature.

Nice shots! I grew up in the middle of bobcat country and never saw anymore than tracks and a their den, that I left alone…. My brother was walking on a trail once and there was one just watching him like a lazy boy. It freaked him out a little, just because they are still such a gloriously “wild” creature.

  4. Awwww what a beautiful kitty! It’s amazing how long the mom looks after the little ones. I would be so tempted to cuddle with them…

  7. neat shots. how far away were you from the cats? they are such elusive creatures around here in South Dakota. do they have many predators to worry about? great post!

As a former Cub Scout, I’ve always been partial to real bobcats. It must have been so cool to see them in their element!

Wonderful photos! Momma bobcat looks as if she’s giving you the stink eye, perhaps. Thanks for posting these, they made my afternoon.

I am a cat lover and these are beautiful! Living in the mountains of WNC for 17 years I walked outside one spring day on the driveway and felt something watching me. Turning to the left about 30 yards from me was a Bobcat. It was a beautiful creature. We just stared at each other as I froze. Quietly, he turned around and walked away into the woods. You want some bear stories! I got em!

  13. How extraordinary to see bobcats at all, but to be able to photograph them is very special. I have always been told that, other than a puma, nothing else is quite so reclusive! I wonder if the presence of the young ones makes it harder for the mother to remain hidden?

  14. That cat is so cute 🙂

Such beautiful kitties! I live in NC and my mom grew up hearing bobcats on summer nights. Those sounds were long gone, but this summer late one night while walking our puppy, I heard one! I hope I get a chance to get its picture too like you. Thanks for sharing your pictures!

I have a fondness for bobcats. These are beautiful shots. Don’t let the size fool you, though; they are formidable hunters and can take down prey larger than they are.

We spend our winters hoping to glimpse ‘the wildcat’ as our children call him in North Eastern Slovenia. They have some interesting theories about how we could get to meet him properly – this post for example! http://confessionsofacatwoman.com/2011/10/29/big-cats-bob-cats-hairy-cats-scary-cats/

Thank you for posting this. Wildlife is awesome. We’ve had bobcats around our parts for years. Lately, however, we’ve had some newcomers move to town—city folk—who, for whatever irrational reason, are scared of all manner of wildlife. I was in the woods recently not too far from houses when I came across some kids with guns. I asked them what they were doing. They said their parents had told them to go out and find the bobcats and kill them because bobcats are dangerous. I told the kids to take their guns and go home and that if I came across a dead bobcat, I’d be hunting for them.

I like this blog entry because it shows the cats as the natural wonder they are instead of portraying them as a dangerous nuisance. Thank you.

  44. Lovely shots and what beautiful animals. Blessings to you.
