Fantastic Sparrow

I’ve mentioned before that to have a really successful Big Year you must have a good deal of help from friends, Ebird and other internet birding sites.

White-crowned Sparrow ... A fantastic # 130

Today I visited Daggerwing Nature Center in Boca Raton.  My friend Jake had seen a White-crowned Sparrow there two days ago and I was praying that it would not be a one day wonder.  The picture above was the only look I got of this guy.  I had seen a Prairie Warbler and had just brought my lens up when the Sparrow popped up and then was gone.  I could not believe my luck!!!

The White-crowned Sparrow is not a regular visitor to Florida and I had not figured one into my year but am so glad to get one.  It is also a new County bird for me.

House Sparrow ... # 131 ... In an Ivy covered pillar at Publix!!

The House Sparrow on the other hand is probably one of the easiest birds to find.  Go to any Grocery Store or Strip Mall and you will generally find House Sparrows.  The funny thing is I rarely see one away from their prefered habitat.  I’ve never seen one at Green Cay and I’ve been there hundreds of times.

This was my last gimme species.  There are 50-75 birds I can /will see the rest of the year but I will have to go and look for them in their particular habitats or wait for migration in the Spring and Fall.  A couple of really good storms to move the birds around would be nice too!

The two Sparrows put me at 131 species photographed so far this year … tomorrows target is Burrowing Owl!!

About sheriffsmith

I have worked for the Broward County Sheriff's Office the last 13 years and spend most of my free time birdwatching / naturewatching and photographing the birds and nature that I encounter. I believe God has blessed us with a world that is so absolutely fascinating and wonderful and I'm doing my best to discover and show others all that he has provided us with in nature.
